Chapter 9

Andi listened as Cole told her about redesigning the kitchen and bathrooms a few years ago. The house was massive for just one person to live in alone. She had the idea that maybe he’d been waiting for his mate so they could start a family. Perhaps all of the Ghost shifters had. Jax and Damon were the only ones to share a house before their mates began showing up, but the rest of them built their homes large enough to hold a big family.

You’re a genius, Andi teased inwardly. She snickered and tried to cover it with a cough. Of course, they’d been waiting for their mates to start a family.

Like a lightbulb being turned on in a darkened room, the revelation of Cole wanting a family dumped ice into the pit of Andi’s stomach. God, she felt like throwing up. She’d been so selfish in wanting him all to herself, she never looked outside of her own little bubble long enough to consider that he wanted children.

He lifted his hand behind him and ran it through her hair, drawing her closer as she leaned her cheek into his touch. She hoped his affection would be this freely given once he knew the truth.

Cole tried to put her down, but she tightened her arms around his neck and her legs around his middle.

“You don’t have to tell me anything if you don’t want to.” The sweet, honest notes in the tone of his voice almost wrecked her.

And that right there was why she was falling for him. It didn’t matter to Cole whether she kept her secrets or told him everything. Not because he didn’t care, but because he didn’t want to upset her. He didn’t want her to give up any piece of herself that brought her sadness.

The part of Andi that forced her to build a wall to
